Article in today's news re the need to regulate therapists and counsellors in the UK - and not before time. Perhaps the titles need protected as a starting point.
We have heard experiences and stories from the public about "counsellors" who hold only a certificate in counselling skills which does not qualify a person with the thorough training necessary assessment and academic skill set that is required with a full degree to respond safely and assess appropriately the client who presents in the room with a complex difficulty that appeared mild to moderate at the point of referral.
We have also heard of practitioners in some situations who call themselves "trauma counsellors" where an add on 4 day course was completed. It can be confusing for the public.
All of our work as qualified therapists and counsellors is trauma work.

Authority(PSA).
This means that we have completed one often 2 University degrees have passed exams and been awarded a professional qualification that allows us to sit in a therapy room with a child or parent and work with them safely and appropriately. We are indemnity insured and adhere to a strict ethical code of conduct and guideline as set by our Registration bodies.
We are required to receive clinical supervision of our cases which is a check and balance for the public.
When you or your child are offered therapeutic support- ask the necessary questions re qualification/ supervision/ indemnity and ensure that the person who offers support is appropriately trained and equipped with the necessary tools and credentials to do so.
Some titles or courses/ pieces of work on offer sound appealing/ catchy/ include buzzwords...but what do they really mean?
